A

Account - An account allows people to sign up to WhatsApp via their phone numbers and get an account linked to it. WhatsApp offers three types of accounts: Personal/Standard, Business, and WhatsApp Business Platform.

Active - High quality - A message template status that tells you that customers like your message quality.

Active - Low Quality - A message template status warning that customers are unhappy with the quality. Such a template is in the red zone and may be disabled soon.

Active - Medium Quality - A message template status that tells you that your customers are unhappy and your template may soon be paused.

Active - Quality Pending -> A message template stating that your customers have yet to rate it for quality. Such a template can be sent to customers.

API - An application program interface that allows organisations to send and receive unlimited WhatsApp messages after approval.

Archived chat - A feature that allows you to hide individual or group chats for better organisation and prioritisation of conversations.

Authentication conversation - A conversation between businesses and users that authenticates users with one-time passcodes during login processes.

Authentication template/ Authentication message template - A message template that allows businesses to verify users with OTPs during a login process.

B

Backup chat - An option in WhatsApp settings that allows users to create chat and media history on local storage of Google Drive.

Bi-directional messaging - A system of messaging that supports sending and receiving messages for commercial purposes.

Blocked contacts - A set of contacts that can no longer call you, send you messages, see status updates, see your online status, and see any changes you make to your profile photo.

Body - The main message you send to the customer which is also part of the message template. You can add emojis, variables, and basic styling to the body of a message.

Broadcast list - A feature in WhatsApp that allows you to save lists of contacts you want to send repeated messages to.

Business buttons - A dedicated button users see in an approved message template that increases engagement. There are two types of business buttons: Quick replies and Call to action.

Business Initiated Conversations (BIC) - Conversations that a business starts by sending out pre-approved message templates to their opted-in customers.

Business Initiated Conversations (BIC) price - The price charged by Meta for every conversation a business initiates. This price is based on the type of conversation, i.e., marketing, service, authentication, or utility, and is charged in 24-hour increments.

Business profile - A profile that showcases your formal business presence on WhatsApp.

Business Verification - A process that helps Meta confirm that your business account belongs to a legitimate organization run by an authorized representative.

Call to action button - A button that allows customers to take action after reading a WhatsApp message. WhatsApp allows a maximum of 2 buttons per template.

Catalog - A section in the WhatsApp Business app allowing businesses to showcase their products and services, prices, descriptions, and website links.

Chatbot - A software that uses artificial intelligence or pre-written rules to engage with customers.

Chat plugin - A software you can embed on your website or social media to redirect your customers to WhatsApp.

Click-to-chat link - A link that allows customers to begin chatting with a WhatsApp Business account without saving their phone number.

Connected Status - A status that shows your business can now send outgoing messages within your messaging limit.

Consent - A mandatory permission granted by customers to receive messages from WhatsApp Business accounts.

Contact/s - The list of numbers in your WhatsApp phonebook.

Conversation - A 24-hour messaging window is initiated only when a business messages a customer, even if the customer messaged the business first.

Display name - A readable name is displayed instead of a verified business account phone number.

Embedded sign-up - A way for Business Solution Providers to get businesses to onboard the WhatsApp Business Platform directly from their websites.

Encryption key - A unique key that helps encrypt and decrypt messages between sender and receiver.

End-to-end encryption - A method of encryption used by WhatsApp that ensures only you and the recipient can read/listen to the conversation. Not even WhatsApp is privy to the communication.

Fingerprint lock - A security feature in WhatsApp that requires the user’s fingerprint to unlock the app.

Flagged status - A status that shows the message quality rating is low, and the tier can be downgraded.

Footer - A text-based message template section that can contain only 60 characters.

Free entry point conversations - Conversations with businesses that start when users click CTAs on ads that show a click to WhatsApp button or a Facebook page CTA. Such conversations are free, need to be initiated by users, and have a 72-hour window.

Free tier conversations - A set of 1000 conversations/ month/ phone number given to all WhatsApp Business Accounts.

Green badge/tick - A badge that shows the phone number belongs to an Official Business Account (OBA).

Group Chat - A WhatsApp chat feature where participants of the group can chat and exchange messages with everyone.

Header - An optional field in the WhatsApp message template that allows a 60-character limit. You can also insert an image or a document.

Highly Structured Message (HSM) - Another name for the pre-built message template that is used by businesses to converse via WhatsApp outside the 24-hour window.

Incoming message/s - WhatsApp message/s received by a business or user.

Linked Device/s - A feature that allows businesses to use the same WhatsApp account on web browsers.

M

Marketing conversation - Conversation initiated by a business that includes promotions, offers, updates, invitations, or requests for customers to respond or take action.

Marketing template - A flexible message template that includes promotions, offers, updates, invitations, recommendations, and requests to complete transactions. These templates relate to the business and the products and services it offers.

Media - Images, videos, GIFs, and documents that contacts can share via WhatsApp.

Messaging rate limit/ Messaging limit - A messaging limit based on the number of unique customers businesses can reach. This limit is set in tiers, and you can move up the tier by keeping your message quality above medium.

Notable business - A well-known, established business that is featured in promotion-free publications.

Notification - A feature that informs the user of recent activity on WhatsApp.

O

Opt-in - A form of permission or agreement your customer sends you to receive messages and notifications from your business.

Opt-out - An option your customer can exercise to not receive any marketing messages from your business by leaving your mailing list.

Outgoing message/s - WhatsApp messages sent by a business or user.

P

Phone number limits - A limit of 20 registered phone numbers that can be assigned to the WhatsApp Business Account.

Profile picture - A picture that people see when they save your number or when they start a conversation with you.

Profile verification - A process by which your profile is verified by WhatsApp, and a green tick appears.

Q

QR code - A type of two-dimensional matrix bar code your friends and family can use to add you. You can also use this code to sign in to WhatsApp on multiple devices.

Quick reply button - A type of button attached at the end of a WhatsApp message that allows customers to send a message without typing it out.

R

Rate - A way for customers to provide feedback on the individual chats businesses send.

Report - A WhatsApp feature allowing users to send feedback to WhatsApp. A report also shares the last 5 messages, the user ID, and any media that was shared.

Restricted Status - A status assigned to business accounts that have reached their messaging limit.

S

Sender quality - A rating your business receives based on customer feedback on messages received over 7 days.

Service conversation - A conversation that begins in response to a user-initiated message. The conversation window lasts 24 hours.

Session messages - Any message sent to the customer by a business in response to a user-initiated conversation within 24 hours.

Status privacy - A feature in WhatsApp that allows you to change who can see you online and how to share your status on Facebook.

Stickers - A feature that allows you to add small animations to text conversations.

Spam - WhatsApp messages that spread misinformation or extort money by tricking users.

T

Template - Also called an HSM. It is a predefined message that businesses can use to connect and reconnect with their customers once they have opted in.

Template approval -> A process that ensures all messages follow specific guidelines laid by WhatsApp.

Template rejection -> An act that means the submitted template has fallen short of the approved guidelines. The rejected template can be resubmitted after correcting the shortfall.

Tiers - The messaging limits assigned to each phone number of a Business account.

Transactional message - A type of message triggered by individual actions customers take.

Two-step verification -> A security feature that adds a second layer of security to your WhatsApp account via a PIN.

Two-way communication - The capability of business messaging software to create a conversation with customers instead of talking to them.

Unsend message - A feature that allows you to delete sent messages.

User consent - An agreement between the user and the business that allows the business to initiate conversations with them.

User-Initiated Conversations (UIC) - A conversation with a business that is started by a customer or user.

User-Initiated Conversations (UIC) price - Price businesses pay to Meta or Business Service Providers for conversations started by users.

Utility conversation - A conversation that facilitates a specific request or updates a customer about an ongoing transaction.

Utility template - A message template that relates to particular transactions and achieves one of the following: confirm, change, or suspend a transaction or subscription.

Verified business accounts - A business account on WhatsApp that displays the green tick.

Video call - A call that connects you via video with any contact on your phonebook using WhatsApp. The call uses data incurring a charge.

Voice call - A call placed to any contact on your phonebook using WhatsApp. The call uses data to incur a charge.

Voice message/note - A form of message that uses the sender's voice to communicate instantly. All voice messages are time-sensitive and downloaded instantly.

WhatsApp Business (also WhatsApp Business app) - A free business app for small businesses that allows 4 people to respond to customers through the app or browser.

WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) - Any account using the WhatsApp Business app or the WhatsApp Business Platform is a business account.

WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) limits - A set of limitations imposed by Meta on all WABAs.

WhatsApp Business API - A software to send messages in bulk, integrate with other platforms and create personalized messaging experiences with chatbots.

WhatsApp Business Management API - The WhatsApp Business Management API allows you to programmatically manage your WhatsApp Business Account assets, such as message templates and phone numbers.

WhatsApp Business Platform (formerly WhatsApp Business API) - A software to help businesses integrate with any system and communicate with thousands of customers via WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Business Solution provider - A third-party solution provider that helps businesses communicate with their customers on the WhatsApp Business Platform.

WhatsApp Manager - A centralized dashboard offered by Meta where you can manage all your inquiries and phone numbers and deliver excellent service.

WhatsApp Official Business Account (OBA) - A business account with a green badge assigned to authentic and notable brands by WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Web - A browser-based version of WhatsApp that lets users communicate by scanning a QR code.
